Addressing Occupational Violence in the Disability Sector: Building Disability Support Worker Capability - Victoria (online)

In this seminar we will explore the capabilities required to provide good support for people who have Behaviour Support Plans and how this impacts the safety and wellbeing of the workers providing the support. It will explore attitudes, skills and knowledge and the role of frontline leadership in supporting good and safe practice.This seminar will be complemented by a deep dive series in May exploring topic areas within critical elements of good services provision: Deep dive sessions. This is a three-part deep dive Community of Practice series in the Addressing Occupational Violence project. Keeping everybody safe is the focus of this project and this series will explore key areas to build frontline workforce knowledge and skills that both addresses quality service provision and worker safety.

Each session will focus on developing skills and knowledge in a key area or practice:

• Deep dive session 1: Multi Element Positive Behaviour Support. This first session will highlight fundamentals of Positive Behaviour support practices and their role in safe service delivery.
• Deep dive session 2: Person Centred Active Support. This session will examine the critical elements of PCS, how it differs from other support models and benefits of this model of services delivery
• Deep dive session 3: Creating a good Communication Environment. This session will be presented by Karyn Muscat, Speech Pathologist, who has extensive experience working with people who use Alternative and Augmentative Communication. The session will explore ways to better understand the communication needs, practical communication supports in home-based setting to assist with understanding and how to be a good communication partner.

Practice leaders, frontline Supervisors, advanced disability support workers, frontline services delivery managers and learning and development personnel in Victoria.
