Transport guide on disability access
The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development (DIRD) has invited public comment on a new guide for improving disability access on public transport systems across the nation.
The guide, The Whole Journey: A Guide for Thinking Beyond Compliance to Create Accessible Public Transport Journeys, has been prepared to “encourage policymakers, planners, designers, builders, certifiers and operators to think beyond compliance and the physical and governance boundaries of services and infrastructure and focus instead on people’s accessibility needs across their whole journey”.
Submissions on the Guide Consultation Draft should be lodged by 31 May 2017.

Comment sought on national plan
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester said the guide addressed issues that affected the entire community.
“From commuters’ rights through to community organisations, disability access on our public transport system is an issue that impacts thousands of people every day,” Mr Chester said.
“Getting people’s feedback on the draft guide is a big part of getting the system right to ensure support across the whole journey.”
He said the final result would be better and far more accessible public transport systems throughout Australia that met the needs of all members of the community.
